This 620-mile range of mountains is in eastern South Africa. The scenery, especially in the north, is considered the most spectacular in South Africa, a sublime medley of rugged peaks, scarps, pinnacles, forest, waterfalls and rivers. It also has over 22,000 examples of San rock art at 600 sites, many probably at least 40,000 years old. The range contains the highest point in South Africa, Mafedi Peak (11,306 ft). The range's name means Dragon Mountains in Afrikaans but is uKhahlamba in Zulu, or Barrier of Spears. What is there to do? Plenty of hiking and scenic drives, including the hairpin road to Sani Pass (9,430 ft), the highest point (with the highest pub) you can reach in a car in southern Africa. Worth a visit.
